McConnel introduce the new Discaerator 4000
Demonstrated for the first time at the recent cereals event, McConnel have introduced
a new single pass cultivator with a 4 metre working width - the Discaerator 4000.
Effectively offering a 33% increase in output over the successful 3000 it is sure
to appeal to the larger farmer and contractor.
The well-proven concept of the Discaerator has been taken a step further not only
in productivity but also in design, as the 4000 is totally different to the 3000
in that it’s a trailed machine. The separate cultivation units and roller are individually
mounted on an exceptionally robust mainframe.
All new configuration allows the operator a multiplicity of choice in working depth
for both discs and legs, enabling optimum settings for differing soil conditions,
with the flexibility to change, for example to work deeper on tramlines. This also
offers the opportunity to save fuel when only shallow cultivation is required.
With the choice of 7 or 9 cultivator legs - minimum tractor power is 250hp - the
working depth is altered in two ways. Firstly, the legs can be set manually on 4
different settings, but for quick and easy adjustment the parallel mounted frame
height can be moved hydraulically and set with ramlocks in 18 increments. The leg
settings are independent to the discs and the maximum working depth is 410mm (16in).
The unique design of the McConnel legs do not mix subsoil with topsoil, but heave
and aerate the soil. Mechanical break back legs are fitted as standard using a 4
life shear bolt system. The optional hydraulic break back legs have an auto-reset
function that resets, fully independently, without operator input.
The disc unit features two rows of 500mm concave serrated discs. The front row consists
of 9 discs at 500mm spacing at a 15deg angle with 17 discs in the rear row at an
opposing 15deg angle in 250mm spacing. The two rows work the soil in opposite directions
leaving a fine tilth. Each disc is individually mounted on the frame and features
a rubber shock absorber for increased durability and low maintenance.
Working depth for the discs is set by the packer roller height adjuster in 5 increments
of 25 mm. A 600mm ridge packer roller with scraper is standard with an option of
800mm.
Built to McConnel’s exacting standards, transport is also a key issue. The Discaerator
4000 has hydraulic folding wings reducing the width to 2.8m, whilst the wheels are
lowered into transport mode hydraulically. Both are secured with transport locks.
Road lighting and hydraulic brakes are fitted as standard.
With the combination of quality and design McConnel has created a single pass cultivation
machine for all conditions with the ultimate flexibility.
The range is soon to be extended as 5 and 6 metre versions are currently under construction.

Shakaerator retro fit reaps big rewards
A little ingenuity goes a long way in agriculture and a highly practical solution
for a combined cultivation and drilling cycle could reap significant rewards for
enterprising farmers.
That’s the view of Herefordshire farmer Jonathon Goodwin who believes many of his
farming colleagues may be missing an opportunity to create better soil growing conditions
prompting improved yields while at the same time saving considerable sums on highly
priced new machinery.
The combined use of a standard three metre McConnel shakaerator linkage system and
power harrow for optimum seed bed preparation has been reducing man hours and increasing
yields for the innovative arable and beef farmer who last year averaged 1.9 tonnes
of oilseed rape an acre having adopted the practice for the first time on the family’s
815-acre farm near Hereford.
Utilising a piece of standard equipment that most farmers have sitting somewhere
in the yard and by employing the linkage system to attach a power harrow may not
be state of the art, but it has certainly been delivering impressive results in
the fields and on the books.
According to Jonathon, it provides both a practical and intelligent solution in
the creation of an ideal seed bed in one pass for farmers constantly wrestling to
stretch the finances and make best use of time and resources. And, while the concept
may not be revolutionary, what impresses is the fact that this cost-effective retro-fit
is achieving the sort of results that might be associated with a bespoke machine
costing considerably more than the the price paid for the three-point, rear-linkage
arms.
Having purchased a shakaerator and retro-fitted a set of McConnel rear-linkage arms,
the Hereford farmer has now taken the development a stage further this year and
attached a seed unit on top of the shakaerator as a third option. The additional
configuration required a day in the workshop attaching a main bracket for the seed
unit and seven adjustable brackets to allow the seeds to drop at the perfect point
and optimum depth of approximately a centimetre behind the shakaerator legs.
The ability to combine these processes in one pass and create the optimum seed bed
environment for tap roots such as rape through the use of a shakaerator drastically
reduces the time and cost involved in carrying out another pass. This might be calculated
conservatively at between £10 - £12 an acre according to Jonathon Goodwin.
“It’s a practical solution that makes sense from every perspective. We looked at
other options, but they required a very high horsepower tractor between 160 – 200
HP. Then, there was the investment in the new machinery itself which was colossal.
Frankly, in our position, we just couldn’t justify it,” he says.
“We thought about it and came up with more of a DIY approach, but it’s something
anyone could do. Most farmers have a shakaerator and a power harrow, so it’s simply
a case of using existing equipment. The addition of the seed box was just another
natural development and it works with a great level of accuracy and control.
“Using the rear-linkage arms, we put the standard three-metre power harrow on the
back of the shakaerator so we could take out the compaction and form the seed bed
and then follow with the harrow behind to create the tilth.
“It also operates using a 150 HP tractor which is still fairly standard so we didn’t
need to consider additional investment in this area either. I reckon we’ve saved
a small fortune as well as reducing the man hours significantly,” he adds.
As for the results out in the field, Jonathon has already carried out extensive
use of the retro-fit combination and believes that the experiment has been a resounding
success. He’s also been renting out the retro-fit machine to several of his neighbours
“When you look at the results achieved and the seed bed created in one pass, it’s
even more pleasing. I reckon it’s definitely as good as anything else I’ve seen,
but at a fraction of the cost. These days it’s all very well looking through the
glossy brochures and seeing all these incredibly expensive machines and dreaming,
but when they’re not an option you’ve just got to get on with it and use what you’ve
got in the yard,” he concludes.

New XTC controls
McConnel has updated its most popular proportional electronic control box for its
Power Arm reach arm mowers, the mid-range XTC unit. The improvements make it easier
to use and provide the operator with more functions.
On the latest XTC controls, new black styling matches McConnel’s top of the range
V4 Pro controls, with a cleaner design for better visibility of the unit, where
the push button switches of the established XTC control box have been replaced with
easier to use thumb wheels and the old-style toggle switches with a custom membrane
keypad for better visibility. For added safety, a smoother.
surface prevents accidental contact with the switches and there is a new large emergency
stop button in place of the old toggle switch.
Operators will also appreciate the new mini joystick, which has three proportional
controls that operate the main functions of the Power Arm: reach, lift and head
angle. All can be activated simultaneously with just two fingers, so it is extremely
easy and comfortable to use.
Safety of operation is also enhanced as lift and angle float are disabled on arm
movements and automatically restarted on joystick release. The new XTC control box
can now also be used on a wider range of power units as it has 12 and 24v operating
voltage.

The New PA6085 And PA6585T
Taking centre stage at the 2010 McConnel Open Days the PA6085 and PA6585T herald
the next generation of reach mowers from McConnel and present higher powered, higher
specification bracket and three point linkage mounted machines in a compact package
designed and built for the professional user.
The PA6085 comes with a maximum reach of 6.0m and the PA6585T, with 1.2m of telescoping
arm provides a reach of up to 6.5m.
As expected from a top of the range professional machine, the standard specification
is exceptionally high. To suit individual user preferences there is a choice of
controls and both models are available as a standard fixed arm or up to 1.5m forward
extension midcut; the PA6085 can also be specified in VFR (variable forward reach)
configuration.
Building on the success of the heavy duty PA5600, 6400, 6500T, 7700T and 8000T series – which is highly regarded by contractors - McConnel has boosted the performance
potential of the PA6085 and PA6585T by achieving significant reductions in weight, while increasing build strength, through the extensive use of Domex steel, which
has twice the strength of conventional steel.
As a result, the new models are more compact, with a tidy main frame, a new lower
profile tank design, and maintain the McConnel quality and durability expected from
a professional machine.
Both models come as standard with a 1.2m flailhead, featuring a new ‘soft start’
rotor control. Drive is via an impressive independent 85hp hydraulic gear system
that represents a substantial 30% power increase over
previous models. Higher working
pressures are achieved to maintain efficiency over the entire pressure range and
operate well in all conditions.
The machines’ exceptional performance is further improved through the incorporation
of a higher capacity oil cooler. To give more cooling, when the optional integrated
blower is fitted, it is completely concealed within the machine and draws air in
over the oil cooler before discharging it from the bottom right-hand side of the
guards at a 45deg angle towards the cutting area.
To eliminate damage to the power unit, a mechanical rocker stop allows full movement of the arms when they are in the working position but flips up when the arms are
folded into transport mode to prevent any excess movement. The stop can be adjusted
to suit different makes of tractor.
Although the new design makes the PA6085 and PA6585T unmistakable, for easy identification
the letters and figures denote specific aspects of the machine: PA6085 = PA (Power
Arm) 60 (6m reach) 85 (85hp). PA6585T = PA (Power Arm) 65 (6.5m reach) 85 (85hp)
T (telescopic).

The New PA70T
Professional hedge cutting and verge mowing contractors with the need for a versatile,
long reach machine that can be quickly hitched and unhitched from the tractor now
have the option of the McConnel PA70T.
Featuring an impressive 7.0m reach (including 1.0m of telescoping). This combination
was previously only available as a five-point axle mounted machine due to the weight
but can now also be supplied as a three-point linkage mounted machine.
This has been achieved by fabricating the PA70T from Domex steel. As this material
has twice the strength of mild steel, it has enabled the weight to be reduced without
sacrificing build strength.
At the flailhead, a 65hp direct drive
totally independent hydraulic system (derated
from 85hp) with an oil cooler as standard and a new revolutionary gear pump rated
at 310 bar – 150% over the actual system pressure – maintains its efficiency further
over the entire pressure range of operation. It also provides increased reliability
and durability as the pump is working well within its capability.
A new design of telescopic arm has resulted in a compact overall arm geometry, making
the versatile PA70T ideal for close cutting and working in areas where height restrictions
may be an issue - low bridges or cables for example – with the availability of additional
reach when required. The new telescoping arm has been designed with ease of assembly
and adjustment in mind and has the wear pads placed along the edges of the box section,
where they also provide the best support.
With ease of servicing a crucial aspect of efficient machine operation, the filtration
on the PA70T provides a high degree of protection and incorporates a special return
element that gives the capacity of double spin-on filters but allows new oil to
be poured through the filter to ensure it is clean before it enters the system.
Two large capacity suction filters protect the pumps and can be removed from outside
the tank for cleaning or replacement.
Additional new features include a new metal rear
cover with the cooler integrated
in the rear bumper bar, a location that allows the ingress of clean air. The bumper
bar also provides excellent protection for the cooler and allows it to be accessible
for cleaning.
Reflecting the McConnel PA70T’s high level of specification, parallel Hy-reach arm
geometry, hydraulic safety breakaway, power slew and road lighting are standard.
A choice of control systems is available, including the EDS (Easy Drive System)
for automatic verge flotation.

Merlin Xtreme Offset verge mowers
McConnel has increased its range of linkage-mounted mowers with the state
of the art Merlin Xtreme Offset, a model that boasts a number of new features specifically designed to increase the productivity of the professional verge mowing contractor.
The new range provides working widths of 1.6 and 2.0m, and both models incorporate
600mm of hydraulic offset to allow cutting outside the tractor wheels. This attribute
is in addition to a hydraulically adjustable flailhead working angle of +90/-60deg,
which extends the use of the mowers to the maintenance of banks and ditch sides.
To enable contractors to configure a machine to best suit their preference and match
it to the situation it will be used in, the Merlin Xtreme Offset verge mowers are
offered in left or right-hand build options for rear or front Cat 2/3 three-point
linkage mounting, with tractor requirements from 60hp.
Cutting is by a large diameter rotor, which is pto-driven at 540 or 1000rpm and
incorporates a double spiral flail layout for smooth precise operation. The height
of cut is adjustable from 40 – 160mm and the combination of the standard hydraulic
float system and J-flails mounted on twisted shackles ensure a quality finish every
time.
A PTO overrun device and a flailhead safety break-back system provide protection
for both the tractor and mower, minimising potential downtime and the repair costs
incurred due to damage.

Domex revolution
The start of a new era in hedge and verge cutter design and build, the McConnel
Open Days will introduce more extensive use of Domex steel across the range. This
is a first for a manufacturer with a notable pedigree, to introduce such a major step forward. In use,
Domex effectively improves the build strength of the machine whilst using less steel,
as it is inherently twice as strong as mild steel. As a result there is a significant
reduction in the overall weight of each model but the quality and durability for
which McConnel has an outstanding reputation, is improved.
In addition, the overall weight of tractor and implement in unison is critical for
road use. Domex steel provides the answer. Stronger, more powerful, longer reach
machines are now available for use without the need for a larger power unit
